It’s not “just a backpack.” It’s an opportunity.
At least 70% of public schools in Central Florida are considered high-need, and our teachers report more than half of their students arrive on the first day of school without all the necessary supplies to learn. Knowing this, teachers often purchase supplies out of their own pockets to ensure every child in their class has an equal opportunity to start the school year with success.
This summer, generous community businesses and groups have stepped up to help alleviate this burden on our teachers and the families of their students.
Each school supply collected and dollar raised has already made an impact. A Gift for Teaching places more than $65,000 worth of free supplies directly into the hands of local students every day.
Throughout the school year, eligible teachers have the opportunity to shop at a store, online, and through a mobile unit to bring back resources that meet their students educational needs as well as increase the variety and scope of daily projects in their classrooms – all at no cost.
Without access to these supplies for learning, student achievement, their interest in learning, and self-esteem are impacted – and the school year has only just begun!
