What started as a blank English Language Arts classroom door transformed into a canvas for cultural exploration, creativity, and student learning at Colonial High School.

To honor Hispanic Heritage Month, Mr. Jose Pizarro-Cruz tasked his classes to create a door display for a school-wide decorating contest. Together, they used a simple collection of supplies (paper, scissors, rulers, coloring utensils, and tape) to bring their assignment to life.

But the project wasn’t just about making something visually appealing. It was a writing assignment, too.

After bringing color to their designs, students researched the meanings behind their illustrations, putting their knowledge and personal reflection into words – connecting writing, art, and global awareness in one hands-on experience.

For Mr. Pizarro-Cruz, this lesson has become an annual activity that holds special meaning for both him and his students:

One of the most memorable traditions in my classroom is the Cultural Illustration Project. I provide my students with an array of items they can use to create a cultural display to be used in the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Door Decoration contest.

Students love using the supplies provided by A Gift for Teaching to make these colorful artworks and pieces to represent their country, culture, or heritage. Without the supplies, this tradition might not be possible.

This door serves as an example of what’s possible when students have the tools to showcase their learning. The activity offered an opportunity to explore different perspectives, reflect on what was shared, and develop something to celebrate together. For Mr. Pizarro-Cruz, it was an opportunity to turn a routine English lesson into an experience for connection and self-expression.

Small Supplies. Big Lessons.

For teachers, having access to free supplies makes it easier to turn the curriculum into a true learning moment.

In the hands of a teacher, basic school supplies become tools for discovery. Paper is really a place for ideas to grow. Markers are a method a future leader can craft their story. A classroom project becomes an experience students remember long after the lesson ends.

The materials may be simple. What students can do with them is anything but.

For Mr. Pizarro-Cruz, these items helped transform a door into a Hispanic Heritage Month lesson that brought students together and created a welcoming display for the whole school to enjoy as they walked to class.

When teachers have access to the supplies they need, they have the ability to bring their lessons to life – all at no cost with A Gift for Teaching.
