The Story of Pencil Boy
Since 1998, Pencil Boy has represented A Gift for Teaching as part of our iconic logo.
Pencil Boy was created by Joyce Steigerwald, a former SeaWorld graphic artist and friend of A Gift for Teaching’s founder Gary Landwirth. For years, Pencil Boy lived exclusively on paper as a friendly five‑year‑old character who came to embody the organization’s values and spirit.
In 2025, Pencil Boy’s story took an exciting turn when he came to life as a full-bodied mascot. This transformation has allowed Pencil Boy to step out from behind the logo and into our community, meeting new friends, and spreading joy throughout Central Florida.
Today, Pencil Boy continues to shine as a symbol of learning, generosity, and support for teachers and students — inspiring everyone he meets with the simple message that a single pencil can change a life.
