Plans to build backpacks with supplies for local students to be prepared and excited to learn

[Orlando, FL] March 2, 2021 – Coming this June, A Gift For Teaching will hold its second annual community giveback project, “The Great Big Backpack Build,” to provide brand-new backpacks filled with essential school supplies for students who need them most.

“New school supplies are now considered a luxury. From deciding between distance or in-person learning to choosing between reliable internet access or food, thousands of families continue to fight for a taste of normalcy for their children. And our teachers are caught in the middle of it – striving to continue providing the best education possible for our community’s future leaders – with diminishing resources.”

– Jane Thompson, President of A Gift For Teaching

The Great Big Backpack Build aims to provide relief for local families and teachers by outfitting students with a backpack and school supplies to safely call their own, at no cost. Public school teachers in Orange and Osceola Counties share that having access to materials like pencils and paper, even in a digital learning environment, have a tremendous impact on their students’ attendance, achievement, self-esteem, and interest in learning.

Last year, The Great Big Backpack Build welcomed groups of volunteers over the course of six days, and built 12,175 backpacks to distribute to those in need. Generous community sponsors are critical for its continued success this coming school year. Each sponsor level funds a number of backpacks and supplies as well as provides an impactful volunteer opportunity for employees and organization members in a safe, socially-distanced setting. Sponsor commitment deadline is April 12, 2021.

New to this year is the opportunity for individuals to participate in the giveback experience. Each individual registration of $100 funds four additional backpacks with supplies, and the full amount of the registration is tax-deductible as allowed by law. Individual registration closes May 10, 2021. Additional details can be found at
