Orlando, FL – December 18, 2019 – A Gift For Teaching (AGFT), Central Florida’s primary provider of free school supplies, recognized three local students at their annual Grant a Wish event with a 5-minute shopping spree in their Free Store. Jionni (1st Grade), Jahmya (7th Grade), and Djyverson (10th Grade) were nominated by their teachers for their hard work and outstanding attitude, despite difficult circumstances and hardships.
Together, the students raced throughout the Free Store to fill as many shopping carts as possible with all the school supplies and gifts their heart’s desire. The fun didn’t stop there as these deserving children were then also rewarded with gift cards, gift baskets, and other fun surprises thanks to generous community supporters: Tupperware Brands, Universal Orlando, Walmart, Service King, Publix Supermarket, Cicis, Orlando Magic, Microsoft, and Chick-fil-A The Mall at Millenia. Because of the community’s support, these families will not have to choose between a new pack of pencils or a special holiday gift this season.
“Once again, many of our most generous partners have come to the table to provide a truly special experience to three of our community’s most deserving students,” said Jane Thompson, president of AGFT. “These children do their very best despite overcoming difficult circumstances. We are thrilled to be able to come together and honor the students and their families during the holiday season.”
More than 70% of students in Central Florida come from families that can’t afford lunch, let alone school supplies. Thanks to generous donors and matching funders, The Joe & Sarah Galloway Foundation, Mary Palmer Family Foundation, and The Martin Andersen-Gracia Andersen Foundation, Inc, more than $178,500 was raised for A Gift For Teaching’s Year End Giving campaign to provide essential supplies for local students to finish the school year strong.
