A Gift For Music FAQs
What is A Gift For Music?
A Gift For Music (AGFM) is a program of A Gift For Teaching that provides stringed instrument instruction in select schools that would otherwise not have the opportunity. This program is free to the school and students and currently serves third, fourth and fifth graders in six Orange County public schools. AGFM began in 1999, is funded in part by Walt Disney World Resort and is the largest and longest running program of A Gift For Teaching.
What are the benefits of music education?
There are many positive benefits related to studying a musical instrument, especially when a child begins study by age 8. Students with a background in music score significantly higher on standardized tests, receive more academic honors, resist peer pressure, experience improved math and reading scores, and show an improved self esteem and enjoyment of school.
Are there any other programs like A Gift For Music around the country?
There are similar programs throughout the United States, but AGFM is the only program of its kind in Central Florida to teach low-income students to play stringed instruments in a classroom setting, free of charge, working with over 400 students each school year.
How can my child become involved?
We currently serve students who attend one of the six schools that have the AGFM program. If your child is in 5th or 6th grade and has at least two years experience on violin, viola, cello or bass and can read music proficiently, they can audition to join the Core Orchestra which meets most Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. during the school year at the A Gift For Teaching office. Students in grades 7 through 12 with three or more years experience can audition to join our Chamber Orchestra which meets most Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Which schools participate in the program?
The AGFM program is currently operating in the following elementary schools for the 2010-2011 school year: Azalea Park, Eccleston, Fern Creek, Orlo Vista, Three Points, and Ventura. For more information on how a school qualifies for the AGFM program, please contact Michelle Feinberg, Director.
Does A Gift For Music take donations?
Yes. AGFM is always trying to provide better musical learning opportunities for students. To do that, AGFM is always in need of financial donations to pay for instruction, materials, supplies and instruments. We accept any new or used stringed instruments in good repair and music/orchestra stands.
I would like to become an instructor or assistant for A Gift For Music. How do I get involved?
AGFM looks for qualified, certified string instructors to teach classes on part-time basis. AGFM also needs classroom assistants to work with students and the instructor during class. You do not have to have any experience with stringed instruments though must possess a proficiency in reading music. Our peak hiring time is during the summer to ensure the program has a full staff on board by mid-August.
I am interested in volunteering with A Gift For Music. How do I get involved?
AGFM is always looking for people who would like to invest in the future of Central Florida's students. We utilize volunteers in many ways. Volunteers with musical backgrounds are wonderful assets to have in the classroom during the week, at our Saturday orchestra rehearsals, or for mentoring students. Volunteers without music backgrounds are also just as valuable to us to help with program administration, or at our winter and spring holiday concerts. Please contact Michelle Feinberg, Director, for more information.
